How to Use a Travel Humidor: A 5-Step Setup

A travel humidor is not a small desktop humidor. It has no cedar to season, no room for a hygrometer to drift slowly, and no margin for a lid left open. Here is how to use one properly, from the first charge to the last cigar of the trip.

Step 1: charge it before you pack it

An ABS case arrives dry. Before the first trip:

  • Fill the mini humidifier with distilled water or PG solution. Tap water leaves mineral scale that clogs the foam and can mark the cigars.
  • Or use a Boveda pack — a 69% pack sized for the case works without any water at all, and it cannot spill.
  • Close the lid and leave it overnight. The foam and the air inside need time to reach 65–72% RH. Packing cigars into a dry case and hoping for the best is the most common mistake.

If the case has a built-in hygrometer, check it after those 24 hours. A mechanical dial can be off by a few points; the salt test tells you how far.

Step 2: load it without overpacking

The foam cut-outs are sized for cigars up to 60 ring gauge. Two rules:

  • Do not force a cigar into a slot that is too small. Compressing the foam pushes the lid up and puts load on the gasket before the flight even starts.
  • Do not add one more “just in case”. If the lid needs pressure to close, you have too many cigars in the case — that is what makes it hard to open after a flight.

Lay the cigars in with the caps alternating ends if the case allows it, so the shapes do not nest into each other.

Step 3: keep it closed during the trip

Every time you open the lid, the air inside exchanges with the air outside. In a car or a hotel room at 40% RH, that is a real loss, and the humidifier has to work it back.

  • Take out what you plan to smoke, then close it.
  • Keep the case out of direct sun and out of a parked car. Heat drives humidity out of the foam and can push cigars past 75% RH.
  • If you are on a beach or a golf course, put the case back in the bag rather than on the table.

Step 4: open it after the flight

A sealed case that was closed at ground level will resist opening at altitude — the cabin pressure is lower than the pressure inside the case. Press the lid down, squeeze the two long sides, and flick one latch while pressing. Full explanation: why a travel humidor is hard to open after a flight.

Step 5: recharge between trips

  • Distilled water humidifier: refill when the foam feels dry to the touch, usually every 2–4 weeks of use.
  • Boveda: replace when the pack turns stiff and crunchy. A 69% pack typically lasts one to three months in a sealed case.
  • Empty and air-dry the case when you get home. Storing it closed and damp is how foam starts to smell.

What not to do

  • Do not use a travel case for long-term storage. It is built to hold humidity for a trip, not to age cigars for a year. A desktop humidor does that job.
  • Do not put wet cigars in. If a cigar feels damp, it will raise the humidity inside the case and can transfer to its neighbours.
  • Do not clean the foam with soap or alcohol. Both leave residue that transfers to wrappers. Water only.
  • Do not seal it with cigars inside for months. Even a good gasket lets a little air exchange; check and recharge before each trip.

Which case for which trip

The 5-cigar Flagship is the one for a day, a round of golf or a weekend — it fits a jacket pocket and has the gauge on the lid. The 10-cigar T10 is for a week away or two smokers, with three layers and a detachable ashtray. Both are part of the waterproof travel humidor range.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to season a travel humidor?

No. Seasoning is for cedar-lined desktop humidors. An ABS travel case only needs the humidifier charged or a Boveda pack added, then a day to settle.

How often should I open it?

Once or twice a day when you are smoking from it. Every opening costs humidity, so take out what you need and close it again.

Can I leave cigars in it between trips?

For a few weeks, yes, if the humidifier is charged. For months, move them to a desktop humidor and keep the travel case empty and dry.

What humidity should it read?

65 to 72% RH. 69% is the usual target. If the dial sits under 60% after a day with a charged humidifier, check the gasket and calibrate the gauge.
