Every travel humidor question eventually comes down to one number: five or ten. Both sizes hold 65–72% humidity, both are crushproof, and both fit in a carry-on. What changes is how long you can be away, and how much you want to carry besides the cigars.
The short answer
- 5-cigar case: a day, a weekend, a round of golf, or a commute. It fits a jacket pocket and weighs under half a kilo.
- 10-cigar case: a week away, two smokers travelling together, or anyone who wants the lighter and ashtray in the same box.
If you smoke two or three cigars a day on a trip, the maths is simple: a weekend needs four to six cigars, a week needs fourteen to twenty. That is the whole decision.
What actually changes with size
Not the seal, and not the shell. The 5-cigar Flagship and the 10-cigar T10 use the same high-impact ABS, the same silicone gasket and the same top-mounted hygrometer. The differences are practical:
- Layers. The 5-cigar case is a single foam block with five cut-outs. The T10 uses three stacked layers, which is how it holds ten cigars without them rubbing together.
- Footprint. The T10 is roughly twice the volume. It still fits a carry-on, but it no longer disappears into a jacket pocket.
- Extras. The T10 adds a stainless ashtray and a dedicated lighter slot. The Flagship has neither, which is why it is the slimmer of the two.
When a 5-cigar case is enough
The 5-cigar case is the one you carry when you are not sure you will smoke at all: a golf day, a dinner, a short flight. It holds a selection rather than a supply — two for the round, one for after dinner, two spare.
It is also the better choice if you already own a desktop humidor and only need something for the road. The Explorer Series Flagship covers that job at $27.99, including the hygrometer you can read without opening the case.
When you need the 10-cigar case
Two situations push you to ten. The first is trip length: a week away with two or three cigars a day needs more than five slots, and restocking on the road is not always possible. The second is company: if two people are smoking from the same case, five cigars disappear fast.
The T10 also solves the small annoyances — the ashtray means you are not hunting for one on a hotel balcony, and the lighter slot keeps a torch from rolling around in a bag. It is $39.99.

Size does not change how humidity works
Both cases hold the same 65–72% range, and both rely on the gasket rather than the size of the box. What changes is how much air is inside: a 10-cigar case takes slightly longer to settle after you open it, and it holds its humidity a little longer because there is more buffer. Neither difference matters on a weekend trip.
The pack you use matters more than the size. A Boveda 69% pack sized for the case, or the included mini humidifier charged with distilled water, keeps either case steady. If you want the longer explanation, the travel humidor with hygrometer guide covers the gauge, the salt test and why opening the lid costs you humidity.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fit 10 cigars in the 5-cigar case?
No. The foam cut-outs are fixed at five, and forcing a sixth cigar in defeats the purpose: the foam is there to stop movement, not to be compressed.
Does a bigger case hold humidity better?
Slightly, because there is more air inside to buffer changes, but the difference over a weekend is negligible. The seal is what matters, and both cases use the same gasket.
Which one fits in a carry-on?
Both. The 10-cigar case takes more space but is still well within carry-on dimensions. Cigars and cases are allowed through security; the lighter rules are a separate question, covered in the travel humidor TSA rules.
Do I need the ashtray?
Only if you smoke somewhere without one. If you mostly smoke at home or at a club, the 5-cigar case is the better fit and the lower price.
Which should you buy?
Buy the 5-cigar case if most trips are a day or a weekend and you want something you can pocket. Buy the 10-cigar case if a week away is normal, if two of you are smoking, or if you want the ashtray and lighter slot in the same box. Both sit in the waterproof travel humidor range, alongside the cheaper SE1 if you do not need a gauge.
